SCU EAGLE'S BRIDGE FOR SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

A mandatory study hall and assistance program for ALL scholar-athletes. Study Hall is once a week for 2 hours in the cafeteria for all students for the duration of the semester. Students who play and travel for school sports are not left 'high-and-dry' once their season is over but continue to find focus, assistance, and support in the SCU EAGLE'S BRIDGE. The program is a partnership between the SCU University Library Department and the Department of Athletics.

SPRING 2010 TEXTBOOKS

SCU TEXTBOOKS MAY BE PURCHASED AT THE BOOKSTORE ON THE CAMPUS OF SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY OR ON DESIGNATED DATES ON THE SCU CAMPUS.

US PRESIDENT NAMES OCTOBER 'INFORMATION LITERACY MONTH'

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press
For Immediate Release October 1, 2009
NATIONAL INFORMATION LITERACY AWARENESS MONTH, 2009-
- -BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAA PROCLAMATION

Every day, we are inundated with vast amounts of information. A 24-hour news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation. This new type of literacy also requires competency with communicationtechnologies, including computers and mobile devices that can help in our day-to-day decisionmaking. National Information Literacy Awareness Month highlights the need for all Americans to be adept in the skills necessary to effectively navigate the Information Age.

Though we may know how to find the information we need, we must also know how to evaluate it. Over the past decade, we have seen a crisis of authenticity emerge. We now live in a world where anyone can publish an opinion or perspective, whether true or not, and have that opinion amplified within the information marketplace. At the same time, Americans have unprecedented access to the diverse and independent sources of information, as well as institutions such as libraries and universities, that can help separate truth from fiction and signal from noise.

Our Nation's educators and institutions of learning must be aware of -- and adjust to -- these new realities. In addition to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, it is equally important that our students are given the tools required to take advantage of the information available to them. The ability to seek, find, and decipher information can be applied to countless life decisions, whether financial, medical, educational, or technical.

This month, we dedicate ourselves to increasing information literacy awareness so that all citizens understand its vital importance. An informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the information they seek, in all its forms.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month. I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the important role information plays in our daily lives, and appreciate the need for a greater understanding of its impact.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

INFORMATION LITERACY: How Email Polite Are You?

In our modern world of email, Facebook, Twitter, and the like remember to take your manners along into Cyberspace!

Email Manners:
  • Respond as soon as possible to every legitimate email. Responses can be "I rec'd your email - get back to you later with a reply", "Sorry, can't help you now", "Here's the information/answer/whatever you were looking for". Some email systems allow you to set an auto responder for vacations; use it to send a nice message, "I have rec'd your email and will get to it as soon as possible."
  • Never let emails stack up - check them daily (or if few contacts weekly).
  • Be kind and polite - always!
  • Check you spelling before you hit "enter" or "send".
  • Never email someone when you are upset or mad or hurt. Cool down before thinking of a response.
  • Never USE ALL CAPS to send mail (or anything else!). It is hard to read and means you are yelling at the other party. So save the caps for the first letter of each new sentence and proper names.
  • Remember an email can be read by a third party (and in some job settings it will be) so think about what you say, what use the email for, and who you send them to before you shoot that message off.
  • Email is for short, to the point communication, and not long rambling letters.
  • Avoid over using email (that adorable video clip of the laughing pig may be hilarious but not everybody has the same amount of bandwidth, memory, or time to open it and enjoy). When you send an email - you want it to be noticed and read. Keep it that way.
  • Add an address and contact information to the signature line so it goes out with each email.

NEW PRESIDENT IS NAMED

Southwestern Christian University names new President:
Dr. Huckeby becomes the University's 11th President

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Board of Regents of Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, OK has announced the appointment of Dr. Ed Huckeby as the 11th President of SCU. Huckeby, who currently serves as the Chief Academic and Operating Officer at Northeastern State University's Broken Arrow campus, will lead the SCU team effective January 4, 2010. Dr. Huckeby is an Oklahoma native with degrees from East Central University and The University of Oklahoma. He received his Doctor of Education Degree in Administration from Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Dan Beller, chair of the Southwestern Christian University Board of Regents, said that the Presidential Search Committee had worked diligently over the past 8 months to find a visionary leader best suited for SCU's historic faith tradition and its quest for academic excellence and expansion.

"Huckeby was elected from a pool of highly qualified applicants because of his stellar academic credentials, history of proven academic community leadership, and Christian standards compatible with those of our founding denomination", said Beller. "We are excited to have a person of his caliber and experience to lead SCU into the next decade."

Accredited by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Southwestern Christian University continues its transition from its historical role as a bible college to that of a Christian liberal arts university. Although a primary mission of the institution continues to be that of educating students in a Christian environment, its curriculum is being expanded to include an array of business, education, social sciences and arts offerings.

"I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve the students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Southwestern Christian University and be involved in the exciting future which lies ahead for the institution", said Huckeby. "It is indeed an honor to have been chosen as Southwestern's visionary leader, and I look forward to the next decade as the capstone experience of my career."

Dr. Huckeby has held several significant state higher education positions including serving as the first director of the Enid Higher Education Program, Dean of the Graduate School at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and, for the past decade, as the chief academic and operations administrator of the NSU-Broken Arrow campus.

Dr. Huckeby was the first employee hired at NSU Broken Arrow campus and has lead the campus from a population of 1,057 in 1999 to a current Fall 2009 enrollment of over 3,200. He is the current president-elect of the National Association of Branch Campus Administrators and serves as president of the Broken Arrow Arts and Humanities Council and vice-chairman of the Broken Arrow Economic Development Corporation. Often recognized as a "renaissance man," Huckeby is a member of the DiVinci Institute Board of Directors, has served as the Executive Director of Tulsa Ballet and is recognized internationally as a conductor and composer of over 170 published and recorded works of symphonic band and wind ensemble music.

GRAD SCHOOL CHANGES: TORCH PASSES - VISION CONTUNUES

Since 1946, Southwestern Christian University has proudly provided academic offerings that are firmly grounded on the inspired, infallible Word of God. Bringing the Word of God into every curricular and co-curricular activity on this campus has made us who we are to this day. In 1992, SCU introduced our Master of Ministry program which also carried this same foundational education philosophy.

It was at this time that Dr. Garnet Pike came and led a collaborative effort to establish this program. Under the leadership of Dr. Pike, the SCU Master of Ministry program has graduated alumni who serve all over the world for the Pentecostal Holiness Church and other constituencies. In fact, of the 28 Conference Bishops currently serving in the PH Church, 60% of those are alumni of SCU. Henry David Thoreau once said "success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it." Dr. Pike has worked tirelessly for 17 years to establish and structure this program.

Effective August 1st, the torch that Dr. Pike has carried for 17 years will be passed on to John Chasteen. In 2004, John Chasteen came to SCU as the Assistant Dean in the Graduate Program for the very purpose of a future transition into the Deanship. During John's five years at SCU he has become a certified Life Coach and has developed a very popular Life Coaching concentration in the program. John brings to this position the practical experience of a seasoned pastor, Conference Bishop of the Grace Bible Ministries, as well as educational leadership abilities. This announcement is timely as John has recently finished his coursework in a Doctorate of Ministry degree at Oral Roberts University. John believes that "Dr. Pike's hard work and dedication has laid a firm foundation for SCU and the denomination to continue to build upon. We must continue to take the message of the cross to an ever-changing postmodern world."

Dr. Garnet Pike has been named Dean Emeritus and will continue to serve and collaborate with SCU alongside John Chasteen for the Fall 2009 semester. SCU is confident that the Master of Ministry degree will continue to influence, expand and increase its impact on the International Pentecostal Holiness Church and beyond.

Your Opportunity to be an SCU FRIEND

Ever since I took over as Southwestern's Chief Academic Officer, it has been my ambition and drive to broaden and deepen our academic offerings by; offering more degrees at multiple levels; escalating the intellectual tone of SCU's organizational culture; and making explicit the implicit academic robustness and respectability of our degrees to the public. My overarching ambition, as has become apparent to some of you, is to show the relevance and compatibility of the Pentecostal ethos with strong academics, and how Pentecostalism, when fully understood, embraced and integrated, strengthens Christian liberal arts education in a manner that is unique.

SCU is on the verge of a tremendous breakthrough, with many pieces coming together to attain the critical mass necessary for significant success. Such pieces range from curricula improvements, strategic organizational realignment, increases in qualified servant-leader-type knowledgeable faculty, and an expectant student body. But there is one piece that I need your help with, i.e., an adequately equipped and enriched classroom environment.

We recently took a tour of our classrooms to assess our physical infrastructure's readiness in enabling us to attain our academic ambitions. I report to you that they were not. Consequently, a comprehensive list was compiled, listing the needs that must be met in order for me to have the classrooms ready for this coming academic year.
I have included that list below. Please look through the list and let me know if you can help with any of the following: finances, time/labor or supplies.

My intention is to have two campus work days on the 22nd and 23nd of July between 9am and 6pm. If you are able to help, please respond to academics@swcu.edu.

SENIOR LIBRARY WORKERS AWARDED

Smitha Balla (left) and Esther Koo (right) were awarded the first "Helping Others Succeed" recognitions. These are library student workers who have exhibited dedication and service in providing crucial services to the institution, the library and their fellow students. Library workers are, in the words of Library Director, Marilyn A. Hudson, "the most important on campus." Library workers provide access to resources for evening and weekend hours, return resources to their shelves for easy access, and provide help in circulating materials.

SCU LIBRARY NAMES 2009 OUTSTANDING LIBRARY ASSISTANT

Graduating senior, Adelaide Simms, was named "Outstanding Library Assistant" in the recent SCU Awards Assembly. This honor is given to a graduating senior whose work with the library has been above and beyond in helping the students, the school, and fellow students.
